I Am

John 10:1-18

There are so many lessons in this passage on which we could focus. But I think for today, as we near Holy Week, it is important for us to focus on what Jesus says about himself. When Jesus first gives the lesson, the listeners are confused so he tries to clear it up for them.

So what does he say about himself? Well, first he calls himself the door to the sheep pin. I think we could even say “gate.” He’s the way in and out. He is the protection between the sheep and the outside threats. He offers life by being the way into safety and out to green pastures.

Next, he says he is the shepherd- but not just a shepherd. He is the good shepherd. He knows his sheep. He has even named them! They are not just a means to an end (a source of income or sign of wealth). They are part of HIS flock.

The last thing I see, is that Jesus says he is willing… He is willing to die for those he loves. He is willing to go out and gather his sheep no matter where they are. He is willing.

So what does that say to you? What do you think after reading this passage?
